Wanderer through the heart of the world

Buddhist philosophy says that we are all born bearing the seed of perfection. Maybe not all of us see it, maybe not all of us are willing to make it grow, but we are all given the chance to reach enlightenment. Stelian Pavalache has a magical, round and simple way of saying that his beloved nature graced him with a blessing: the play of light. You can read that phrase twice, because it holds the essence of the special story we’re about to share with you, following the footsteps of the photographer, the journey of Satwa Guna.

The seed of the Satwa Guna odyssey had been planted into Stelian Pavalache’s spirit since childhood, when the power supply used to be shut down so often during the communist regime and all the lights went out; the absence of light taught him the pleasure of the chase of light and shadow, the chase of harsh reality and ethereal essences and introduced him to the Light. “I started reading a lot, about photography, about the answers to those grinding questions, about Eliade’s far away lands, about civilizations, shapes and illusions, and how they spark in the human spirit, about faith and beliefs – this is where I spent most time, they are plenty and are all selfish…” The light planted in him during these first years, the photos taken by his father – the old man, as Stelian calls him – and the books that always accompanied him, they all led him to the Satwa Guna journey, “the personal journey of making peace between the seen and the unseen”, as the photographer explains.

Satwa Guna is the key to a thousand worlds or to a single world, depending on how you look at things… In ancient Sanskrit, Satwa Guna means “the illusion of form” and

represents Maya, the illusion of things manifested and non-manifested, the awakening to the primordial inner self. And today we are talking about Satwa Guna as the credo of Stelian Pavalache’s mission to roam around the world and reveal it the way it is: the same everywhere, no matter the place, religion, tradition or belief. To a profound eye, the world carries its secrets in plain sight.

The first phase of the Satwa Guna project took place in 2004, with a trip to Kazakhstan and Kirghizstan and it came to fruition on a crest, a foot higher than 7,000 m, on the Lord of the Spirits mountain top or Khan Tengri under its original name, in the Tien Shan mountains. A year later, our traveler went forth to meet the ancient South-American spirits, in Peru, and in 2007 he reached the holy lands of Tibet, China, Nepal and India, to31 meet probably the most self-conscientious souls of all. The year 2008 revealed faces and lives in Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam, while the year 2010 took Stelian Pavalache to Pakistan, to the heart of the Muslim world, to the Shimshali People. This stage, the Shimshali People, is a project in itself; dealing with the status of women in Muslim society, it was covered in a few steps. The first of them was a true premiere – the conquest of the 6,400 m peak Chashkin Sar by a Pakistani woman. Truthful witnesses of this success are the pictures we have got to know by now, that will be shown during the next months in a series of exhibitions, conferences and discussions on the subject of the Muslim women in the taboo zone, events supported by the National Cultural Institute of Romania. Two documentaries further covering the subject matter are to accompany the story, films that are produced with the help of the British Film School, for the National Geographic Channel.

Satwa Guna will continue to lead Stelian Pavalache to other lands and civilizations, with equally profound and powerful cultures and traditions: Turkey, Iran, Tunisia, once again to Pakistan for the second stage of the Shimshali People project, Bolivia and Chile, and later on Mongolia, Siberia and the closed world of the two poles, South and North, home of the old Inuit communities. The final step will turn to mother Africa, with the promise of its deepest and untainted spiritual essence.

Viewed with love and openness, places and faces reveal themselves to the camera well beyond the space and skin. With the calm power and infinite gentleness brought by synchronicity with the world, the photographer looks beneath the skin and surface, directly into the center of all things and transcends the surface to the essence of the universe. His photography stands out with simple and uncomplicated naturalness: the world may speak differently, but it whispers the same.

Povestea călătorului prin sufletul lumii

Filozofia budistă spune că toți ne naștem cu sămânța desăvârșirii în noi. Atâta doar că poate nu toți suntem la fel de conectați la ea sau la fel de dispuși să o facem să crească. Stelian Pavalache spune despre sine, într-un mod minunat, rotund, simplu și desăvârșit că draga sa natură a avut bunăvoința să îi așeze în suflet binecuvântarea jocului cu lumina. Puteți citi fraza aceasta de două ori, pentru că poartă în ea esența poveștii atât de speciale spre care plecăm, urmând pașii fotografului, pe calea Satwa Guna.

Sămânța odiseei Satwa Guna a fost sădită în sufletul lui Stelian Pavalache în anii copilăriei, când sub regimul comunist se întrerupea în mod frecvent curentul electric și toate luminile se stingeau; luminile stinse i-au făcut cunoscut jocul formelor și al umbrelor, joaca realității și a esențelor și i-au adus Lumina. „Am început să citesc mult, despre fotografie, despre răspunsurile întrebărilor chinuitoare, despre ținuturile îndepărtate ale lui Eliade, despre civilizații, despre forme, despre iluzii, despre cum se aprind ele în sufletul oamenilor, despre credințe – aici am zăbovit mai mult, erau multe și egoiste.” Lumina sădită în copilărie, fotografiile făcute de tatăl sau – bătrânul, cum îi spune Stelian – și cărțile care l-au însoțit mereu, toate l-au condus pe drumul Satwa Guna, „un drum personal către liniștirea lumilor văzute și nevăzute”, așa cum mărturisește acesta.

Satwa Guna este cheia către o mie de lumi sau către una singură, depinde cum privești… În sanscrita veche, Satwa Guna înseamnă „iluzia formei” și reprezintă maya, iluzia celor manifestate și a celor nemanifestate, trezirea la sinele primordial. Iar astăzi vorbim de Satwa Guna ca și crez al misiunii autoasumate a lui Stelian Pavalache de a străbate lumea și de a o dezvălui așa cum e ea: aceeași peste tot, indiferent de așezare, religii, tradiții, credințe. Lumea își poartă misterele la vedere pentru un privitor adânc.

Prima fază a proiectului Satwa Guna s-a întâmplat în 2004, cu o călătorie în Kazahstan și Kirghistan și și-a găsit împlinirea pe un vârf de lume, mai înalt cu o palmă de 7.000 de metri, Stăpânul Spiritelor sau Khan Tengri pe numele lui adevărat, în munții Tien Shan. Un an mai târziu, călătorul nostru a pornit să cunoască străvechile spirite sud-americane, în Peru, iar în 2007 citește poate cele mai întoarse spre ele însele suflete, în Tibet, China, Nepal și India. Anul 2008 îi dezvăluie călătorului viețile oamenilor din Laos, Thailanda, Cambodgia și Vietnam, iar expediția lui 2010 îl poartă în Pakistan, în inima lumii musulmane, sub numele Shimshali People.

Shimshali People, ca proiect în sine, vorbește despre statutul femeii în societatea musulmană și a fost dezvoltat în câteva etape distincte. Prima dintre ele a fost cucerirea vârfului de 6.400 de metri, Chashkin Sar, o premieră în sine, căci nicio altă femeie pakistaneză până la Samina Baig nu a mai reușit să îi atingă creștetul. Pe lângă seria așteptată de fotografii, această etapă a proiectului va fi popularizată prin două filme documentare și printr-o serie de expoziții, conferințe și discuții pe tema femeii musulmane și alpine în zona tabu. Evenimente conexe se vor întâmpla pe tot parcursul următoarelor luni, beneficiind de sprijinul Institutului Cultural Român, dar și al Școlii de Film Britanice, unde vor lua ființă cele două documentare pentru National Geographic.

Satwa Guna îl va purta pe Stelian Pavalache în anii următori spre civilizații la fel de încărcate de puterea și farmecul tradițiilor: în Turcia, Iran, Tunisia, din nou în Pakistan pentru partea a doua a proiectului Shimshali People, după care Bolivia și Chile și mai târziu Mongolia, Siberia și lumile închise ale celor doi poli, la comunitățile inuite cu practici și obiceiuri străvechi. Pasul final îl întoarce spre mama Africă, pe care Stelian Pavalache ne-o va arăta în esența ei spirituală.

Privite cu drag și cu naturalețe, locuri de peste tot se dezvăluie aparatului de fotografiat și oameni din toată lumea se arată lentilei, dincolo de spațiu și de piele. Cu puterea și infinita delicatețe pe care ți-o dă cunoașterea lumii, fotograful transcende suprafața și ne arată esența acestor lumi, iar fotografiile sale impresionează iremediabil prin profunzimea simplă, naturală și necomplicată. Lumea poate vorbi diferit, dar de șoptit, șoptește la fel.
